What to Wear Running in San Francisco in May

Temp: 50F/10C
Humidity/Precip: Moderate/None (we're still in a drought)
Wind: 10-15mph
Distance: 6 miles
Terrain: Hills

What I Wore: Capri tights, long-sleeves with thumb holes (see previous post), visor

Did It Work: Not really. Once again I was freezing. Karl the Fog is here, along with his friend Oceanic Winds. Even though I ran almost the whole time, it took 1.5 miles to stop shivering.

What I Would Change: Warm the head, heart and hands: Tank bra under the top to keep my core warm. Running hat that covers my crown. Wrist warmers - I've been told that wrists are the key to heat - vs. mittens which just seems embarrassingly extreme even if my teeth were literally chattering at one point. Plus, wrist warmers are easier to take off and tuck away.

What to Wear Running: 45 degrees and comfortable

Temp: 45 degrees and sunny
Humidity: 50% (moderate)
Wind: Mild
Distance: 3 miles
Terrain: Flat to Rolling hills

What I Wore to Run: Shorts! T-shirt! Singlet tank underneath and a hat.

Did It Work: Yes. It's definitely shorts season again, if you are comfortable showing your legs. Want
Brooks shorts, Nike tank & T
to enjoy your run? Show a little skin! Pump those bare arms and legs and let the sunshine remind you that winter is over. By the end of my run, it was 50 degrees - spring, such a fickle creature! - so it was nice to have a layer to shed if I would have done a longer run.

Note: It's tempting to overdress in the spring (and maybe underdress in the fall?) because we're sick and tired of being cold after the freezing winter. Resist the temptation and only baby your "cold spots" - those places that refuse to warm up until after Memorial Day (mine are my ears).

Also, make sure that, if you're wearing layers, the bottom layer must wick. Having all your heat and moisture sit on your skin is bad aesthetically and functionally.

Personal note: I think this is one of the best times of year for running - not too hot, not too cold! Good for your muscles, good for the soul!

Happy running.

Best Running Trail in Copenhagen

Travel and running go hand in hand. What better way to get a sense for a place than to run with the locals? Unless, of course, the locals don't run, in which case you'll get a sense for the local fitness.

Copenhagen is full of runners and bikers and has lots of dedicated "sidewalks" for cycling, but not a ton of running paths. There is a nice, gravelly long one, however, along the Sankt Jorgens So (St. George's Lake), in the middle of town. It was very much a local spot - running from the edgy Vestrobro neighborhood, through the ethnic, hipster Norrebro and up into the posh Osterbro area.

The lake is a skinny rectangle divided into sections by bridges. Along both sides are nice paths for biking and running. Trees provide shade and the local runners provide company.

I almost wish I had a Run Ranking system so that the 4 stars I'm giving Sankt Jorgens So would have real meaning. Let's just say, it inspired, it was flat and it was pretty. So go! Run Copenhagen!

By the way, what to wear running in Copenhagen? In early September, it was a cool 50 degrees. I definitely was too cold at the start and, as the photo shows, barely worked up a little sweat. I think a t-shirt with my shorts would have been ideal.
